METYS, a Reference Laboratory for Biochemical Methane Potential (BMP) Testing

The quality of our measurements recognized in an international study involving 31 laboratories worldwide

METYS’ Environmental Biotechnology Department was recognized as one of the six reference laboratories for the quality of its BMP measurements, among the 31 participating laboratories : explore our results.

Benefit from High-Quality BMP Testing

This international recognition confirms the expertise that METYS has developed over the past 20 years.

Choosing METYS for your BMP testing ensures a reliable assessment of methane production potential, helping you design and secure your anaerobic digestion projects, reduce uncertainties in biogas production estimates, and optimize feedstock mixtures.

METYS supports all stakeholders in the anaerobic digestion sector — industrial operators, local authorities, and agricultural businesses — by tailoring its services to their needs and the specific requirements of their projects.

METYS : A Specialized Laboratory for Biochemical Methane Potential (BMP) Testing

The reliability of our measurements is based on a combination of :

  • A rigorous and repeatable testing protocol, developed by INRAE’s Laboratory of Environmental Biotechnology (LBE). This protocol is based on online monitoring of biogas production using gas chromatography. It was previously evaluated in a 2014 interlaboratory study involving 11 European laboratories.
  • Comprehensive control of the entire analytical process, from substrate and microbial inoculum preparation to data processing, result interpretation, and expert assessment.
  • Automated measurements ensuring high repeatability and reproducibility, thanks to an automated sampling system. This

Together, these strengths have once again established METYS as one of the most reliable laboratories for BMP testing.

The study, coordinated by Aarhus University, brought together teams from 31 laboratories worldwide, spanning the Americas, Africa, Asia, Europe, and Oceania. Particular emphasis was placed on improving not only the reproducibility of BMP measurements but also their accuracy. We would like to thank Sasha D. Hafner of Aarhus University and all participating laboratories for their collective efforts to improve BMP testing quality.
