Measuring the concentration of targets of interest in organisms and complex ecosystems is central to biomonitoring, genotyping and animal and plant breeding. Concentration measurements can be carried out using two tools based on different experimental designs. Quantitative PCR enables the detection and measurement of the concentration of a target of interest in a complex sample using a standard range. It is particularly suitable for samples with a high biological content. The latest Digital Droplet PCR technology enables the detection/quantification of rare events in complex matrices, and is particularly suitable for quantifying antibiotic resistance genes and pathogens in complex, lightly loaded matrices, without the need for a standard range.
